STONEHAM GLASSeco Worksurfaces
Car windscreens, old TV screens, beer bottles, cracked mirrors, marmite jars, discarded seashells, old supermarket carrier bags are all being re-cycled and re-used to make stunning worktops and splashbacks.
STONEHAM GLASSeco work surfaces, made from consumer waste which was destined for landfill, will be unveiled at Grand Designs Live 2009, Excel, London, 25 April – 4 May 2009 at Stoneham’s kitchen display, stand K246 and the main kitchen feature across the aisle.
A unique range of colour/patterns have been selected by Stoneham to blend specifically with their furniture with thickness of between 30-60mm.
STONEHAM GLASSeco is made from 85% recycled glass – bottles collected from pubs and clubs and deleaded glass from the 200 million TV screens predicted to be dumped as the nation switches from analogue to digital viewing.
Every day the company washes and crushes 1000s of bottles. The cullets of glass are then bound together and reformed into STONEHAM GLASSeco, a hard-wearing, easy-to-maintain product that has many practical design applications. The new material is completely sustainable and has a virtually zero carbon footprint.
The bottle glass is mixed with deleaded CRT glass, the inner tube and screen from obsolete TVs, which is sourced from Nulife Glass, a West Midlands-based recycling company. STONEHAM GLASSeco is made using the lowest possible energy in an eco factory where water is recycled and bottle collection-miles are kept within a strict 10 mile radius. The company’s manufacturing process creates zero waste and the outfit was recently awarded a top National Recycling Award.
STONEHAM GLASSeco worktops can be supplied with an urban matt finish or they can be highly polished – as smooth as marble or granite – for counter tops in kitchens, bathrooms, bars, restaurants and pubs. Different finishes are achieved by adding other waste-stream materials. On-trend consumers specifying grey worktops are amazed their smoky-coloured worktops are made from old TVs. Whilst crushed mirrors, crunched-up car gearboxes, aluminium filings and copper turnings all add sparkle, and sea-shells collected from seafood restaurants create a pretty delicate effect. A sub-strata layer, set into the base of the tops, made from recycled carrier bags brings the total recycled content to a massive 95%, with research work now underway to develop a recycled resin from PET plastic bottles which result in a 100% recycled product.
All STONEHAM GLASSeco worktops contain an antimicrobial agent SteriTouch®, evenly distributed throughout, including the surface, to ensure the entire worktop is hygienic and protected for its lifetime as the active ingredients will never wash or wear out. SteriTouch® helps to fight the growth of bacteria, such as salmonella, E.Coli, listeria and the MRSA superbug, making STONEHAM GLASSeco particularly useful for commercial food preparation counters, washrooms and health applications.
